Taiwan's Election Results Announced
Democratic Progressive Party's Lai Ching-te Wins Presidency
Legislature Results Too Close to Call
The results of Taiwan's 2024 election are in, and Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has been elected as the next president. The DPP also secured a slim majority in the legislature, but the makeup of the body is still too close to call.
Lai's victory is seen as a major win for the pro-independence DPP, which has built closer ties with the US and EU in recent years. However, the party's narrow margin of victory and the hung legislature indicate that Taiwan's political landscape remains divided.
The election took place on January 13th, 2024, and saw a high voter turnout. Lai's main rival was Hou Yu-ih of the opposition Kuomintang, which favors closer ties with China.
Taiwan's election carries an outsized importance because of the territory's disputed political status. China claims Taiwan as its own territory, and has threatened to use force to unify the island with the mainland.
